Have you tried a different editor than the standard wysiwyg editor in
Joomla with K2?

What is your favourite editor?

There are several editors out there, and there are pro's and con's for all of them. Of course, the showstopper would be if it do not work with K2 :-)

Some things to consider:

Extra buttons placed there by plug-ins: Can they be integrated above the text area instead of the mess of buttons you can get below the text area in the default editor in Joomla?

Insert images: Does it allow any type of editing? Cropping and resizing would be desireable... Is it possible to add caption and credit to the picture as you can with the main picture in K2?

One thing I have not seen in any editor yet is the ability to read EXIF/IPTC data from pictures to avoid double work.

Does it have a good function to clean out formatting codes if you copy and paste text from a html page, Word, Excel etc. or do you have to use html mode to paste the text in to avoid problems?

Does it use the template CSS to show you the text? Can you easily change the background of the textarea (without affecting the final output) in case your text is too light to be read?

Is it easy to create tables for displaying data?

And finally some thoughts about development/support: Is the editor regularly updated? Is the developer active in supporting it? Does he release a new version when he has promised to do so? Does he communicate well with the users?

These last things can make up for a lot of problems. As long as the developers communicate well, users are much more relaxed and will be more patient.

How do you rate the editor you use today?

I believe the standard (free) JCE editor also has the Extended Link Manager that includes the ability to easily add links to text or images that open in a lightbox, the popup window can contain an image, an internal page, an external web page and you can specify the size of the pop up window.

I give JCE 10 stars! I believe it meets all the criteria above except maybe the "ability to read EXIF/IPTC data from pictures", not sure on that one.

I subscribe so I can use the premium features which are Image Manager Extended, Captions, Media Manager, Template Manager & File Manager.

There is also a JCE plugin available on this site for it that allows you to select K2 content when using the editor, very nice!

JCE is one of the extensions I always install first on every site I build. The subscription plugins are a bargain, worth every penny they cost.

Not sure how the rest would be affedcted but creating a table to join category ID's is pretty simple as far as database modeling goes ... That being said, I don't wan't to judge how and why it's the way it is, it simply is :-) Maybe the developpers…

Whatever is done will modify the core, but will work. How about putting the category id's in a field like the xtra filelds and teach the core to parse them out. Its changing the way things work - not likely to happen unless a module like followeyes…

I don't think the concept of the single-category per item content structure is a way of thinking that is advanced and, therefore, a reason to change the content construction strategy and our subsequent way of thinking. It is merely a huge limitation…

you can get the extra fields like this if it suits your needs $custom = $this->item->extra_fields; and then addressing extra fields for the item like echo $custom[1]->value; depending on the position, 0, 1,2,3,4 etc in the array experiment with this…
