In order to create a new item the user have to choose a category first, otherwise he/she will get an error message. We had to implement this control because the client needs to show different tabs in the item form based on the category.
If the user is an Artist he/she will be able to see the Artists category only.
In addition to the classic K2 item tabs (content, image, video, gallery, attachments and extrafields) we added:
1) Video gallery
the user can add one or more videos
for each item and assign to each video a title and a description. The
videos can be uploaded or embedded via provider (just like the one
provided by K2)
2) Audio gallery
the user can add one or more audio files for each item and assign to each audio file a title and a description.
3) Picture gallery
the user can add one or more pictures for each item and assign to each picture a title and a description.
4) Artists gallery
the user can add one or more artist mini profile (a picture of the artists, his/her name and role and a brief description).
5) Awards gallery
the user can add one or more awards (a picture of the award, the venue and a brief description).
6) Thumbnails
for
each of the 5 additional tabs and for the item itself we added a
thumbnail tab which shows the user all the elements added to that item
and let the user upload a thumb image for each of them. if the user
doesn't upload a thumb for an element a "no-thumb pic" will be shown.
Based on the choosen category for a new (or an existing) item some of the tabs will be shown.

informations need to be displayed. Some of the categories have just the
category view (Reels, Services and Download), others have both the
category and item views. For those categories which have just the
category view the content of the item will be shown in a lightbox pane

needs. Every type of element of the item belongs to a tab, and the
end-user can navigate through the tabs with a fancy mootools fade effect
(a screenshot here would help me a lot cause I'm not so good trying to
explain you what I mean XD)

Actually the template mods are difficult for me to explain in plain and
correct english (i'm italian), so if you are interested in my work check

A more flexible and modular design (since we had client needs (and
deadlines) in mind we often created "ad hoc modules")
Conclusions:
I simply love K2! Joomlaworks... thank you so much!
I have one question for K2 staff and community. I tried to implement the different additional content tabs with the plugin extension but I
wasn't able to do so. Indeed I had to hack the core of K2 in order to
realize these mods. I'd rather like to write additional modules and
leave the core untouched . For this reason I cannot upgrade to the last
stable version of K2. So here it comes my question: do you think K2 will
provide this feature? (or it actually already does and I cannot see it?
XD)

As far as i know, K2 its able to extend by plugins, so probably you could make your backend tabs by plugins. There is some info on this community.
One question, could you explain how you implemented the item view tabs, or the lightbox openend to view videos and galleries.

The news slider module is News Show Pro GK1 v.1.0.2 by GK Tools, and I customized it to work with K2 items, to slide automatically every 5 seconds (I guess), to show the news in a lightbox and of course I customized its template to fit the style of the website

To show the videos in a lightbox I used the Rokbox plugin, a free extension made by Rockettheme. For the item tabs it's a bit more complicated, so as soon as I have time I'll write a doc to show you how I did.

well, since you are not sharing your customizations it could mean
a) you want to keep modifications for yourself, understandable since it's your work
b) you didn't think about this
c) you are going to do it in the future
for b and c: it would be a great idea! K2 and gavick's are GPL, i think they would welcome a good module to show K2 items!
you could even send the code to gavick, maybe he would integrate it in the module!
in the end do as you please

I had several problems by downloading files attached to K2 items (Word and Excel file were corrupt). I have fixed this for my client by changing download link to direct link to files. No core file editing needed, just one line in template.

You may get support from your template developer. It seems I had a similar issue and had it resolved that way. I wish I could remember what the fix was.

Although I can upload larger images, when I do it from the front end, the lightbox window shows the home page within the window (as a copy, not transparent). Screen shot attached.
Increasing the memory_limit helped. I had it at 32 MB which I thought would be more than enough for a single 2 MB file. I have it set to 62 MB and uploading the image now works. It seems a bit excessive for uploading a 2 mb image, though.

Well, you just use k2's login component where there's an 'add link' menulink in the menu when you've logged in. You also need to allow front end adding on a user group.
